These are a few of my favourite things #5

I’m doing pretty badly with this 28 posts in 28 days thing.  This is number 14 and there’s less than a week left of this month… I’m not giving up all hope as I have content (well pictures and titles) for 28, we’ll just have to see if I can pull it out of the bag.

I know it’s really boring when people go on about the weather, but seriously, anyone who still tries to say that climate change doesn’t exist, reeeeeally needs to get a grip.  The apocalyptic style rain of last weekend has been replaced with glorious sunshine and cloud-free skies and it’s been lovely.  I saw someone in shorts and flip flops the other day… bit keen mate.

After another fairly stressful week, I’ve had a really chilled weekend so far, hanging out with my best mate, watching films from our childhood, cooking and napping- it’s been blissful.  Much as I LOVE partying, I’m trying to reign it in again until Easter time (ish)- famous last words…

Treats for my Mum, because she’s a babe

Whenever I’m feeling a bit down in the dumps, my Mum is my first port of call.  She’s my favourite person on the whole planet and pretty much always knows how to make me feel better. For these reasons I almost never turn up empty handed, even if it’s just a jar of her favourite peanut butter, I always like to bring her a little something to show her how much I care. Hyancinths and tulips cos they’re her favourite, white lindor with strawberry filling cos she can’t eat milk or dark chocolate and Krispy Kreme, well, because I love them…

Mutton curry, sweet fried plantain, salad slaw and Trini roti bread.

I’m not going to go on about this too much as there’s a full review of them coming up next week, but, if you don’t know about Likkle Bikkle then get to know.  Award winning street food vendors who work from a various food markets and pop ups- find them on Twitter or Facebook to find out where there next events are.

Gammon with mash, veg & parsley sauce

A friend of mine posted a photo of this on Instagram a few weeks ago and I couldn’t get it out of my head.  After a couple of weeks of mentally drooling about it I decided to recreate it for me and my flatmate.  Very retro but extremely delicious.

Croquembouche

If there’s one thing my colleagues do fabulously it’s celebrations/events.  Last week someone who’d worked at the uni for 27 years left so lots of people (not me, I was ill the day before) made/bought in lots of lovely treats to give her a send off.  Sure, her habit of always wanting the window open, even when it was minus bloody 5 and snowing used to drive me to distraction, but she was a very lovely lady and I’m not ashamed to admit I cried like a baby during the speeches.  Personally I think anyone who can stick at a job for 27 years deserves a friggin’ statue in their honour!

I personally found this card hilarious and stood in Sainsburys giggling manically to myself for a good few minutes whilst whatsapping photos of it to my mates.  I bought it for someone who hates birthdays, hates fuss and who I knew would be cringed out by the fact I was even getting him a card.  There was the added pressure of the fact he’s one of the funniest people I know, but thankfully he seemed to like it… not as much as me though!

Roast chicken pho

From the new Nigel Slater book I keep on raving about and am midway through writing a review of. I’m not sure I love it as much as my recipe for ramen, but it comes a close second.  It’s like a hug from the inside and a piece of piss to make.

Gimme

I love this bag, it’s actually from M&S (don’t judge me) and if I hadn’t bought myself a pair of boots and two new cashmere jumpers already this week, then this little beauty would’ve been mine- watch this space though, pay day is less than a week away.

New favourite icecream flavour

Pralines and cream by Haagen-Dazs has always been a firm favourite of mine.  When my parents split up we used to go and visit my Father in Brighton some weekends and when he was around he would always take us to the Haagen-Dazs parlour and let us have whatever we wanted. I always had three flavours, pralines & cream, Macadamia nut brittle and belgian chocolate chip (with caramel sauce, whipped cream and nuts)- this new flavour which I tried for the first time tonight is the perfect marriage of the former and latter flavours. If you don’t like it then you have terrible taste.

Rocco

This cat (and his brother) are honestly the best things I’ve ever bought in my life. They’re fucking naughty, highly destructive and I’m always covered in their fur, but they make me happy every single day. I’m pretty sure I’m coming across like a mental old cat lady so I’ll shut up… for now anyway.

What have been your favourite things this week?  Do you think the sheep card is funny or am I actually turning in to my Mum?  Comment below or tweet me.
