If you have read my previous favourite things post you’ll know I’d predicted a bleak first week back at work after all the fun and frolics of the festive season. However, I’m happy to report that my pessimism was unfounded. Monday was pretty soul destroying, yes, but everyone was in the same boat, the rest of the week seemed to go in a blur and all of a sudden it was the weekend.
Other than a meal out on Friday and Saturday I’ve not really left my flat and it’s been blissful. I’ve caught up on sleep, life admin, tidying and my pampering routine- it was just what I needed and feel zero guilt that Sunday will more than likely be spent doing more of the same, with an emphasis on the former and the latter in that list.
I’ve got a fairly uneventful week coming up too, other than a menu tasting on Tuesday night, it’s all quiet on the Western front, and to be honest, it’s quite a relief. There’s so much I want to do and achieve this year, it’s going to take a lot of juggling, but I’m very excited to get cracking with it all.
I’ve been getting right back into my smoothies again since going back to work, and I can’t tell you how much better I feel for it. I was SO ill before Christmas, uncharacteristically so, I’m hoping that loading myself up with 5-7 a day will prevent a repeat performance any time soon! There’s all sorts of nasty shit going about.
Judging by my blog stats a lot of you got some kind of blender for Christmas, as the traffic to my review and recipes for my beloved Breville Active blend has gone through the roof in the last week or so. Do tell me your favourite combinations in the comments section at the bottom. I think I’m going to do a recipe post about some more of mine, in the next couple of weeks.
I follow a lot of foodie peeps on both Twitter and Instagram so my feeds are so full of recipes, photos and tips that they often go past in a blur, but the other day, over on Emily’s Instagram I saw a photo of a particularly decadent hot chocolate, and a comment from another blogger I follow; Sophie, saying that puts 4-5 lindt balls into warmed milk for the most luxurious hot chocolate ever- FILTH. I grabbed my box of Christmas chocolate (Thorntons) fished 5 praline ones out and headed to the kitchen with my favourite mug. SO good, but I think the lindt thing is going to have to be done too. Both of these girls have really cool cookery blogs and you can find links to them both in the ‘blogs I love’ tab at the top of the page.
Saw this recipe in a Sunday supplement last week and made it for my lovely friend Claire on Wednesday. I would highly recommend it and there’ll be plenty left for leftovers too, I just ate mine from the bowl with the remaining nachos the next day, but they’d be lovely in burritos, enchiladas or with some sort of rice bowl too I reckon. Swap the ketchup for passata if you want a less sugary version as the recipe calls for 200ml of it, I just used extra spice to counteract.
This is another of the ‘to be read’ piles that are dotted around my flat. I’ve actually dipped into a few of these though and really need to revisit. Food (mmmm) and coding (bleurgh)- what a combo.
I haven’t stuck to my pledge to quite literally, switch off, before bed and read. I’d like to say I tried, but I didn’t. I just loooove the internet, and whatsapp, and iMessage… I will try to persevere though as I’m having enough trouble falling asleep as it is, I’m still pining for my daily Christmas naps too.
People often ask me why I’m not overweight, how I manage to pack away so much food and not look like ‘the back end of a bus’ (a direct quote from Facebook)… the answer is simple, the metabolism bequeathed to me by my Mother, and for that (as well as many other things) I will always be grateful to her. It’s her Birthday next week so she came to Brighton to meet me for a bit of late night shopping and a meal out too. We had the best time, we always do. I’m pretty sure she’ll be reading this, so if you are, Happy Birthday, I love you millions x
Just before Christmas I got an email from a lovely PR lady at Jamie’s Italian, inviting me to review their Brighton restaurant. I’ve actually been a few times already and really enjoyed it, but not for a few years. I went on Thursday evening with my Mum and we had a fab time, the full review will be up on my blog on Tuesday but I thought it was definitely deserving of a mention in this post too.
As I was still mourning the loss of my Christmas bedsheets I decided to treat myself to a new set. I’d planned to pick some up in the sales, that was until I watched this vlog and decided that these were the ones that had to be mine. They were super cheap so I’ll report back on how they wash etc, but so far, so good, not too polyesterish at all and they’ve given my room a bit of a facelift as well. You can get them from Tesco website and have them delivered to any store you like even little express ones.
It may amaze those of you who don’t come from Brighton (and be no surprise to those that do) that there are sod all places to get decent fish & chips from in this city. I’d all but given up, when one day, a couple of months ago, I started to hear a bit of a commotion on Twitter about Wolfies, a chippy by Hove station selling decent looking fish & chips as well as pie mash and liquor. I’m going to write a separate review post so I shan’t say too much more, but the fact it’s in this post should give you a clue as to what I thought of it. The review will be up next Thursday.
